Student Name: Nathan Regedanz Project 1 SOCY 100 Date: 20 April 2009 Introduction The office of domestic violence against women defines domestic violence as pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner. Domestic violence does not just affect the immediate victim but is a widespread problem in the United States. Eighthly five percent of domestic violence victims are women (Domestic Violence Facts, 2007). Results of violence can be health care professionals in the treatment of physical injuries, the psychological impact upon the victim, or the aggressive behavior of the abuser. Many women feel alone and helpless because of the lack of knowledge of resources such as the National Domestic Violence Hotline available to assist them 24/7. Another reason why vic tims of domestic violence stay in their situation is fear of not being believed, and that they will be the one projected to have the problem. But for many women who are victims of domestic violence, the choice is to stay with the abuser and try to avoid being beaten, or to leave the situation and face a life of financial insecurity for her children and herself. Based on personal experience as a Military Police Officer I have unfortunately dealt with quiet of bit of cases which involved domestic violence. I believe that there are more domestic violence cases in the military then in the civilian world, due to the stress at work and the prolonged separation of family members. When I read about the fact that most domestic violence cases are not reported I thought of the fact that most times when domestic violence cases are being reported to authorities it is not by the victim or subject but a neighbor or witness.
